316 Stainless vs 6061 Aluminum: Which Bushing Material Is Right for Your Application?

The aluminum-vs-stainless question comes down to four factors: environment, load, weight budget, and target cost. Neither material is "better" — they solve different problems.

6061-T6 aluminum is the default for packaging machinery, conveyors, and aerospace: it machines quickly, weighs roughly a third of an equivalent steel bushing, and handles most industrial duty with a strong strength-to-weight ratio. When corrosion is mainly atmospheric, a clear or hard anodize closes the gap at a fraction of stainless cost.

316 stainless earns its premium when you face chlorides, washdown chemicals, seawater, or food-grade requirements. It resists stress corrosion cracking and wear, and satisfies FDA and marine specs that aluminum cannot.

Rule of thumb: unless your environment demands stainless, start with aluminum and let the torque and fatigue calcs tell you if you need to upgrade. Our selection guide (downloadable above) includes the full comparison table.
